The Wildlife Conservation Group (WCG), in collaboration with Ramakrishna Mission, Shivanahalli, successfully implemented a project focused on conserving peri-urban commons around Bannerghatta National Park. Recognizing the ecological importance of these commons—as reservoirs of biodiversity, sources of food and fodder, and crucial contributors to groundwater recharge and microclimate regulation—the project addressed the growing threats posed by urbanization, neglect, and encroachment. Through extensive mapping of local commons such as lakes and grazing lands (Gomalaas), and by engaging children, youth, and local communities through education and awareness campaigns, the initiative fostered a renewed appreciation for these shared natural resources. By reconnecting communities with their local ecosystems and promoting stewardship, the project empowered stakeholders to play an active role in protecting and sustaining the commons for future generations.
